Key Assessment: Strategic Management Plan
Above are direct links to artifacts I created for the strategic management plan. View full plan below.
Studying strategic management planning allowed me to explore the big picture of librarianship. As a current Special Education teacher, I enjoy serving children with unique needs, and I would like to expand my services. I’d like to serve the community’s needs by helping shape literate citizens. I’d like to serve the school’s needs by collaborating with teachers and helping them find best practices. And most importantly, I’d like to continue serving individuals' needs by helping them acquire knowledge, create new ideas, and discover their hidden talents and interests.
The more I learn about the media specialist’s roles in education, the more on fire I become. These are summaries of what I consider the most inspirational or important ideas that I discovered through strategic management coursework:

"Big Picture" Takeaways
-The teacher-librarian stays alert to shifts on the horizon, a Crowsnester who constantly looks for new technologies and best practices in education.
-Effectively using and producing information and ideas is critical to a free society, and we are on the frontline of teaching such skills. -The brick-and-mortar library is no longer a place of quiet solitude. Libraries must have flexible layouts that can foster 21st century learning opportunities such as research and inquiry, problem-solving, information and digital literacy, and collaboration. -The librarian is a copyright counselor that helps teachers establish an informed, personal level of comfort in using intellectual property. |
-We can achieve our mission by focusing on three major areas: our instructional role as information specialists, building an accessible collection of high quality resources, and “leading from the middle” to reach goals and objectives that have broad ownership within the community.
-The librarian helps teachers leverage technology to create personalized, student-centered learning opportunities. -The librarian uses evidence-based practices to inform decision-making, garner support from the community, and shift perceptions of the librarian’s role to that of a leader. -Communications and advocacy of the library program is an ongoing process. Effective advocacy ranges from building personal relationships with community members to leveraging technologies to reach a global audience. We must share the evidence of our efforts. |
Program Evaluation
Reflection is necessary for improvement. This activity helped me realize the importance of continual self-evaluation, communication with administrators, collaborative planning, collaborative assessment, addressing diverse needs, technology management and integration, and establishing a library advisory committee.
Grant Application Draft
The grant application process allowed me to reflect on and adapt a program that I conceived years ago, before I became a teacher. With a background in journalism, I once had a vision to create Casting Marshside, a multimedia outreach program that featured stories of people in the community who are making a difference. Since studying to become a library media specialist, I have a dream of one day adapting the plan to be a part of my future library program. The Sara Jaffarian School Library Program Award for Exemplary Humanities Programming is an annual award of the American Library Association (ALA) that recognizes excellence in humanities programming in libraries that serve children in grades K-8. The award consists of $5,000 cash, a crystal plaque, and promotion of the winner as a model program for other school libraries. While responding to the grant prompts, I imagined that I had spent the last year running a successful library program with Casting Marshside in place.
