Philosophy
I believe my purpose as a media specialist embraces three areas: the individual, the community, and society.
I want the individual to discover their hidden talents and interests through independent and creative exploration. The media center should promote discovery of new ideas and the excitement of acquiring knowledge. The media specialist inspires the individual to be curious and open-minded in the face of the unknown. They encourage others to become critical thinkers by challenging them to approach information analytically and objectively. The media specialist fosters independent thinkers through the inquiry process. They help prepare students to be caring, thoughtful, progressive individuals equipped with the abilities to pursue their passions and achieve personal goals.
I want the community of the school to be a collaborative network of effective users and producers of information and ideas. The media specialist celebrates diversity and promotes the exchange of knowledge through a variety of media. The learning community is a group of rational and tolerant thinkers who depend on each other in their intellectual pursuits. The media specialist works with teachers to find best practices in the integration of technology and new teaching methods. The media specialist creates learning opportunities that reach beyond the school walls that allow students to fulfill roles as scientists, historians, activists, and entrepreneurs.
I want our society to be capable of peacefully adapting to changing times. Exposure to knowledge without restriction is vital for informed decision making and self-governance. Intellectual freedom is the foundation of the school library program. The media specialist develops a diverse collection of print and digital resources that remain accessible by all patrons. The media specialist teaches safe, responsible, and ethical use of resources. Teachers work together to teach values of fairness, equality, and respect for others so that students can effectively participate in a free society.
